Final Score: Salthill-Knocknacarra 2-12 – 1-14 Maigh Cuilinn
Venue: Pearse Stadium
Maigh Cuilinn’s bid to retain the Frank Fox Cup ended in heartbreaking fashion as a dramatic injury-time goal handed Salthill-Knocknacarra a narrow one-point victory in a thrilling Galway Senior Football Championship final.
First-Half Surge
Playing against the opening-half breeze, Maigh Cuilinn controlled the early stages with a masterclass in patience and execution. Powered by an extraordinary individual display from Dessie Conneely, the reigning champions raced into an early 0-04 to 0-00 lead, with Conneely scoring four superb points (three from play and one free).
Salthill-Knocknacarra struggled to break down Maigh Cuilinn’s defensive press early on, failing to register a score until the 25th minute. However, a late rally before the break, fuelled by substitute Tomo Culhane, saw Salthill snatch a 0-06 to 0-04 half-time lead.
Second-Half Battle
With the breeze at their backs for the second period, Maigh Cuilinn looked to assert dominance. Despite Salthill extending their lead through a Colm Finnegan goal, Maigh Cuilinn refused to yield. Points from Owen Gallagher and the razor-sharp Niall Walsh kept the champions within touching distance.
As the game entered the final ten minutes, Maigh Cuilinn pushed forward with intensity. A fierce effort from Owen Gallagher rattled off the crossbar, but Paul Kelly was on hand to smash the rebound high into the top corner, levelling the match at 1-12 apiece.
Momentum shifted fully in Maigh Cuilinn’s favour into additional time when Peter Cooke launched a magnificent two-pointer from deep, putting Maigh Cuilinn ahead 1-14 to 1-12 with seconds remaining on the clock.
Late Drama
Just as the title looked destined to stay in Maigh Cuilinn, Salthill-Knocknacarra engineered one final attack. A long delivery was claimed by John Maher, who fed Tomo Culhane to fire home a decisive 63rd-minute goal, securing a 2-12 to 1-14 victory at the final whistle.
Thanks to Players & Management
While the result brings immense disappointment, huge credit and immense gratitude go to all the Maigh Cuilinn players and the management team.
Throughout the entire campaign, the squad demonstrated incredible dedication, relentless work rate, and outstanding sportsmanship. Their effort on the day, fighting back from behind to put themselves on the brink of victory, exemplified the character and pride of the club. Thank you to the players, management, and backroom team for their tireless work and for giving the supporters another unforgettable championship journey.
Finally, we offer our warmest congratulations to our near neighbours, Salthill-Knocknacarra, on their victory in a brilliant, hard-fought county final. We wish them the very best of luck as they go on to represent Galway in the Connacht Club Championship!
