Stellar performance against Annaghdown sets up repeat County Final

Dessie Conneely’s accuracy and strong collective effort guide Maigh Cuilinn to county final

Galway SFC Semi-Final
Maigh Cuilinn 4-26
Annaghdown 0-8

A focused and hard-working performance saw Maigh Cuilinn overcome a determined Annaghdown side at Pearse Stadium, securing a place in our fifth consecutive Galway SFC final.

The victory sets up a repeat of last year’s decider against Salthill-Knocknacarra. With new Galway manager Éamonn Fitzmaurice in attendance, the team delivered a solid, disciplined display built on defensive organisation, a high work rate, and steady execution in front of the posts.

To their great credit, Annaghdown brought fierce intensity to the opening quarter and stayed well within touching distance early on. They showed exactly why they reached the last four for the first time since 2002, asking plenty of early questions and ensuring the game remained a tight contest in the opening stages.

However, Maigh Cuilinn gradually found their rhythm. Dessie Conneely—who finished with a highly impressive personal tally of 2-14—struck for two goals in a three-minute spell, finishing off a well-worked team move after 17 minutes before adding a second. Annaghdown continued to press, with Enda Mullarkey and Damien Comer keeping the scoreboard ticking to make it 2-6 to 0-6. Just before the break, Niall Walsh, returning from injury, found the net in added time to give us a 3-8 to 0-6 half-time lead.

Reflecting on that crucial period before half-time, manager Cathal Clancy noted the team’s composure:
“We do feel there’s a lot of experience out on that field, and they can sense when those kind of situations are there. Just before half-time, we put the foot down.”

In the second half, the squad maintained their concentration. Relying on a high tackle count—something forward Fionn McDonagh, speaking to the Maroon and White Pod, noted as a major focus for the group this year—Maigh Cuilinn outscored their opponents 0-8 to 0-1 in the opening ten minutes of the restart.

The afternoon was unfortunately marred by a knee injury to Galway star Damien Comer, who was forced off in the second half. Everyone associated with Maigh Cuilinn wishes Damien a full and speedy recovery; he is a fantastic ambassador for both his club and the county.

As the game progressed, the panel’s depth proved vital. With players like Michael Moughon picking up knocks, the substitutes integrated seamlessly to keep the energy levels high. Peter Cooke, returning for his first start of the year, capped off the performance with a well-taken strike from 20 metres into the top corner.

Ultimately, it was a grounded, collective effort that relied on every player doing their job. As Cathal Clancy stated after the match, the focus now is very simple: “Wipe the boards, start again, and get ready.”

We are incredibly proud of the panel and management for their dedication in reaching another final. We kindly ask everyone in the parish and all our dedicated supporters to get the green and white flags out, bring your voices, and help support the team in the county final against Salthill-Knocknacarra.
