Hard-Fought Win in Stormy Conditions

GALWAY DIVISION 1 / COMÓRTAS PEILE NA GAELTACHTA

Maigh Cuilinn 0-17 Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir 0-8

It was a day where the weather threatened to be the main talking point, but ultimately, it was the resilience and work rate of our senior lads that shone through against a very formidable Naomh Anna, Leitir Móir side.

With the throw-in moved up to 1:00 pm to avoid the worst of Storm Dave, conditions at the pitch were incredibly challenging for both teams. Serving as both Round 3 of the Division 1 League and the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta, there was plenty on the line, and Leitir Móir certainly brought the intensity you would expect for such a crucial fixture.

Playing against a howling gale in the first half, our lads had their backs to the wall. Leitir Móir used the elements intelligently and put us under immense pressure, converting a well-taken two-pointer to edge ahead before half time.

We had to dig deep and be extremely patient. Thankfully, the lads showed incredible economy up front, taking the few chances that came our way to slot over six points from our first six attempts.

Heading into the break trailing by just a single point (0-7 to 0-6) felt like an achievement given the strength of the wind we were facing.

In the second half, with the elements now in our favour, the lads set about turning the tide. Leitir Móir never stopped working and made us earn every yard, but our game management really stood out. We began to make the most of the two-point arc, stringing together some excellent team scores. Paul Kelly was exceptional from dead balls, judging the swirling crosswinds brilliantly to convert some vital frees from outside the arc.

While the final nine-point margin (0-17 to 0-8) might look comfortable on paper, it doesn’t fully reflect the physical, hard-fought nature of the contest against a proud Leitir Móir team. It was our ability to adapt to the elements and secure those crucial two-pointers (finishing with five to Leitir Móir’s one) that ultimately separated the sides.

We are incredibly proud of the squad’s performance, particularly in the closing stages where we were able to introduce a number of our Under-19 players. Giving these younger lads invaluable Division One experience in such a demanding environment is a huge positive for the club moving forward.

A massive thank you to the Naomh Anna,  Leitir Móir players and management for a tough, sporting game.

Finally, a special word of appreciation to our supporters who braved the bitter, stormy conditions to cheer on the lads. Your backing, as always, makes all the difference.

Onwards to the next round!
