Maigh Cuilinn 3-12
Salthill-Knocknacarra 0-8
In a repeat of the 2025 county final, Maigh Cuilinn secured a well-earned victory over Salthill-Knocknacarra in Round 4 of the league at The Prairie on Friday evening. In a fixture that required discipline over flair, the visitors relied on a structured defensive setup and a patient approach in possession to edge past their hosts.
Salthill-Knocknacarra started the brighter of the two sides on their home turf, registering the opening score inside the first 90 seconds. However, Maigh Cuilinn soon settled into their rhythm and largely dictated the tempo from there. Rather than forcing the issue, they opted to recycle the ball through multiple phases, waiting for gaps to appear in the opposing defence.
The foundation for this away victory was laid around the middle third. Ger Davoren produced an excellent display in midfield; his work rate, competitiveness in the air, and intelligent distribution gave Maigh Cuilinn a vital, steadying foothold in the contest.
Alongside him, Paul Kelly kept the scoreboard ticking over reliably. Kelly finished the evening with six points, split evenly between placed balls and efforts from play, converting consistently when his team needed to maintain their advantage.
The decisive score of the first half came from Niall Walsh. Utilizing his forward’s instinct after the ball lost its momentum in a puddle and stayed in the ground, Walsh struck the ball on the firmly, smashing it past the keeper and rattling the back of the net.
He added two further points from play to finish with a personal tally of 1-2.
At the other end of the pitch, the Maigh Cuilinn defence was notably solid. The full-back line of Eoin McGuire, Michael Moughan, and Evan Fox maintained their discipline well throughout the evening. They absorbed spells of sustained pressure from the home side without conceding unnecessary frees, while goalkeeper Pierce Grealy offered a reassuring presence behind them, managing his kick-outs effectively in a congested sector.
A late point from James McLaughlin helped to steady the ship in the closing stages, and the introduction of Conor Faherty from the bench provided fresh legs to help see the game out efficiently.
Ultimately, it was a workmanlike and highly organised performance from Maigh Cuilinn. They set out with a clear tactical plan, executed it with patience, and came away from The Prairie with a well-deserved two points for their league campaign.
Special mention for two of the younger players on the starting team this evening. Both Daniel Cormican and Mark Hynes gave a glimpse of what we can look forward to from these young players in the coming years. Great performance by both lads.
