The present Maigh Cuilinn team has very strong family connections with teams of the past. This is most especially the case in relation to a strong team of the 1952-53 period, at a time when hurling was dominant in the parish.
The Maigh Cuilinn junior side of 1952 which laid the foundation for West Board title victories in 1956 & 1958 was captained by Jim Conneely of Seanbhaile, grandfather of the present team Captain Dessie Conneely and his brother Paul who is a panel member.
The team had James Kelly, the father of the late Padraig “Dandy” Kelly and Club Secretary Mairéad Ní Cheallaigh and grandfather of Sean Paul & Eoghan as well as goalkeeper Seamus Friel, who are much to the fore on the present team.
The full-back was Peter Paul Cooke of Uggoole, father of the previous Chairman and County goalkeeper Martin Cooke, and grandfather of Peter Cooke who is currently in the United States. Cumann Peile Mhaigh Cuilinn is most eagerly looking ahead to its second-ever County Final on Sunday, Oct 4th in Pearse Stadium at 4pm.
It has been a long wait since 11th September 1977. Larry Bohan father of Conor is the only connection with 1977.
