What an unforgettable year it was for the Maigh Cuilinn Minor team in 2013! This incredible group of young footballers embarked on a journey that culminated in a historic County Championship victory, ending a 47-year drought for the club.
The season kicked off in March with a hard-fought draw against Salthill/Knocknacarra in the league. The team went on to win five consecutive league matches, securing a spot in the final against Salthill/Knocknacarra, where they narrowly lost by a goal.
Undeterred, the Minors turned their attention to the Championship. They embarked on a dominant run, overcoming Leitir Mór, Bearna, and Salthill/Knocknacarra to reach the West Final against An Cheathrú Rua. Maigh Cuilinn emerged victorious with a comprehensive win, setting up a County Final clash against Claregalway.
On October 13th, a sea of green and white descended upon Tuam Stadium for a match that would be etched in Maigh Cuilinn’s history. The team delivered a performance for the ages, securing a 2-7 to 1-6 victory and sparking scenes of jubilation among players and supporters alike. Captain Conall Morgan proudly lifted the cup, marking the end of a 47-year wait for a Minor County title.
Over the course of the season, the Minors played 12 games, recording an impressive 10 wins, 1 draw, and just 1 loss. Their scoring prowess was evident, with a remarkable 10-83 scored in the league and 11-43 in the championship.
This success was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and the management team of Padraic Fahy, John Kyne, Peter Carpenter, and Tom Claffey.
Special mention must also go to Thomas Payton, Ben Brennan, and Sean Kelly, who were part of the U16 County Final winning team just three weeks prior, capturing two County medals in a single season!
The 2013 Minor team etched their names into Maigh Cuilinn folklore, inspiring future generations of players and reminding us all of the power of dedication, teamwork, and community spirit.
