Chairman’s Message ahead of 2020 County Final

Thar ceann Cumann Peile Mhaigh Cuilinn ba mhaith liom mile fáilte a chur romhaibh ar fad go dtí Cluiche Ceannais and Chontae. Tá muid tar eis Cluiche Craoibhe an Chontae a shroichint don chéad uair ó 1977 agus tá rudaí rud beag difriúl i mbliana.

On behalf of Cumann Peile Mhaigh Cuilinn, I would like to welcome you to the 2020 Galway County Senior Final. This is a club steeped in history. Founded in 1912, the first set of emerald green jerseys and togs arrived from Elvery’s of Dublin on 31st May 1914 at a total cost of £1-17s-6d. One football and four hurling balls were purchased from Murphy’s of Waterford at a cost of £1-3s-0d. The membership fee to join the club was 3d. The sash on the jersey was traditional at the time and we still use it today.

This is our 1st final since 1977 and while it has been a while in coming, it is very much deserved. A final is like no other game and this year’s final will, of course, be a final experienced in a very different way to finals of the past. It will be a final like no other, with limited access and most of our supporters watching on television or listening to the radio at home or abroad. But this doesn’t lessen the achievement or the dream. After years of knocking on the door, our seniors have achieved that goal against a very experienced Mountbellew/Moylough side led by Val Daly. This is a team that has competed at the highest levels for many years and will be formidable opposition.

Cumann Peile Mhaigh Cuilinn has been developing over the years with a particular emphasis at underage level which is now feeding into the senior squad. This didn’t happen by accident. A lot of people have put their shoulders to the wheel over the years to help us achieve the goal of reaching a senior county final. The objective is to be competitive and the end goal is to reach a final. Players, coaches, parents, wives, girlfriends, supporters, sponsors, volunteers and executive members have all played their part and should all be remembered on an occasion such as this. A special mention goes to our players and coaches. They put in the time, effort, dedication, sweat and tears into a journey on an annual basis.

To all our sponsors, thank you for your very generous support, not just for the final but over the years. Every business or individual we ask for help always does so without hesitation. We are very lucky to have your continued support and it is hugely appreciated by everyone involved. You have all contributed to the club reaching the 2020 Galway County Senior Final.

Ní Neart Go Cur Le Chéile agus is cinnte go dtáining munitir an Chumainn agus muintir an bhaile ar fad le chéile chun cabhrú leis an eacht iontach seo a bhaint amach.

Le means,
Paul Clancy
